English as a second language
When I was a child, I used to be very impressed when the radio played international songs, mainly from North America and South America.
Brazil belongs to South America, but here we don't talk Spanish; we talk Portuguese. Brazil once was a Portugal's colony.
It is important to say that because many foreigners who come to visit our country start to talk Spanish, thinking we understand this language. We don't!
It is very rare to find a Brazilian who can really talk in English. I think I know a lot of English, but it's more for reading and writing than talking. I got no opportunities to talk and practice my speaking skills. But I do my best to learn and practice.
I see that other countries that don't speak English as their native language have more commitment to developing English skills for the people. It doesn't happen in Brazil.
Those English songs played on my radio contributed to my interest in learning this language. But it's a very challenging path due to the fact that studying English in Brazil is very expensive.
Nowadays it's easier because we have YouTube channels, podcasts, and even social media to talk with people from all over the world.
